A lot of the trim pieces on Forwardlook cars had a clear acrylic coating applied over the base metal to give it weather protection. Of course, the UV got to those chemicals across time, and they either dulled up or turned a "milky" coloration, depending on where on the vehicle the parts were. Most likely you are removing this to get to the base metal to shine it. If so, then you need to put something back on that is more modern in formulation. Best stuff I have found is the aluminum wheel protection compounds.
