That coating is the anodizing. You cannot get a chrome-like shine from anodized aluminum. The correct shine for anodized trim is rather satin. Aluminum will shine like chrome if the anodizing is removed and the bare metal is polished. But then you will ruin the original anodizing on a nearly 50 year old part.
