Juri....You are correct in your supposition about the damper being for A/C loads. As the front dress loads increased through the 60s with Power Steering and Air Conditioning becoming much more standard, the harmonic balancers took on the damping of "pulse loads" fed to the crank and (through the timing chain) the camshaft. This was detrimental to the life of the chain and also those nasty platic "silent" sprockets that also became common on engines. So the dampers did the jerk suppression function. I would not worry about it too much, as the new dampers are pretty good. For all-out high horsepower usage, you can use a "fluid-damper" balancer.
