I thought "oil canning" was similiar to what you described but where the sheetmetal didn't pop back out. As in your description where the sound goes "click-clock" and the door or panel would just go "click". The guy that fixed my door used heat and the pointed end of his body hammer to strengthen certain points around the dent to keep it from staying stuck in. The previous owner's solution was a 1/2" of Bondo.
